I’m in a reading slump. It began at the end of August and just sucks! So I only read two books in September which is probably the least I’ve read in a month in about a year. I did start three other books but put them down pretty quickly after picking them up. Either way, these were the two books I finished and honestly? Didn’t enjoy them at all! I’m going to need a intervention from the reading gods ASAP!

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
Here’s the thing- everybody loves this series and the books are pretty short so when my reading slump began I thought; hey! I bet these books will be great! And I even listened to it on audiobook because I heard that the audiobooks were amazing but the truth is, I really didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. In fact, I really didn’t enjoy it that much at all. I only gave the book two stars. The characters felt very one-dimensional and the story was just kind of boring to me. Please, somebody, tell me what I’m missing because I feel like I’m in that nightmare where you walk into a room and everyone stops talking.
I’ll watch the Netflix TV show because I think the aesthetic is something I’d like to see visually and, unlike the majority, I kind of liked the movie. But I won’t continue the series.

Dreamland by Robert L. Anderson*
I won a copy of this from Goodreads and as soon as it dropped through my letterbox I started reading. The idea of walking through other peoples dreams is so cool, so I was excited. And I was still excited until about 1/4 through. Unfortunately, after that it just didn’t do it for me in reality. It’s a pretty short book for all the plot points that it tries to fit in and everything felt either rushed or dragged out.
Also, the smilies and metaphors. They were everywhere. It might be because I’ve been reading a lot of adult books rather than YA or maybe it’s dreamy language but I found my eyes start to skim over it after a while. By the end I really just didn’t care enough about the characters or the story to try and stop skimming.
It wasn’t a bad idea for a book but it just didn’t work for me in the execution.

So that’s it! Shortest and lamest wrap-up ever! But I read a fair few comic books so my first ever Comic Books I Read in… post will be up tomorrow. I’m excited.
